Pruning in winter allow for some rather extreme pruning while minimizing the effect on the plant. The tree-form lilac pictured had grown too large, year after year, for the customer. She requested that it be dramatically uplifted and thinned. Pruning this plant at any other time in the year could have caused major stress and may have affected the health of the lilac. Because it is dormant in the winter recovery will be delayed until spring, when the tree can devote energy to new growth and healing the wounds caused by pruning.
